[attr="class","main"]”Hey, so uh … Dad..” No knock was necessary but his father had always insisted being pestered by his children was no bother at all. It was the first time in weeks he’d actually seen the man sit down and attempt to get some work done outside of the necessities. He would never abandon the people but smaller ticket items were put on hold until he had honest time to review them. One of the reasons he felt bad for interrupting at that moment but also .. not. What better time than the frivolous considering his work was all necessity lately anyway? Not that he ever had free moments. Suppose he could relate. If pen wasn’t on paper for work then the mind was always doing circles around something else. ”On a list of say .. worst case scenarios in your head.. Which of the following would you like the least?” Jasper would have appreciated his creativity at least, had he been present for the conversation. At least he’d gotten his father’s attention relatively easily. ”A. Asteria is pregnant. B. Asteria is pregnant or C.Er .. Mama is back from the dead. Choose wisely.”

[attr="class","main"]Cerulean found their match in adjacent emerald. The chance to see Jackson a rare but never uncherished moment he'd missed dearly in recent weeks. Aside from the usual empty nest syndrome that usually tugged at every pile of paper and latest drama, the recent pandemic and subsequent apocalypses there was also an overwhelming sense of loss he couldn't shake. Maybe it was watching his children grow and move away to different corners of the world or maybe it was the forever foreboding knowledge that nothing he did, or even could do would rid the world of desolation. It was a dream, at least. A pointless one at times, it felt. But a dream nonetheless. The tone adopted by his son enough to raise his brow in suspicion though his features remained as soft and accomodating as they ever had. The first words that left his sons lips demanded every strength keep the unassuming smile from faltering. The continuation, however, caused his glasses to fall into his hands and for their arms to close slowly as long fingertips guided them to the core. "Come again?" They were just as bad as each other, really-, he thought. In their... own ways. "Never...mind- both are...-" he uttered slowly, narrowing his eyes slightly in suspicion. He would joke about either and not bat a lid... but... one was more likely than the other. "Your mother's alive, isn't she?" He realised he'd said it rather quickly, but it was too late to retract. "But if not then-" Your funeral.

[attr="class","main"]Just knowing he made his father consider both outcomes was weirdly satisfying even if he felt somewhat bad about making him worry. He’d worry regardless. Though, considering what he’d just said, he was taking the situation better than expected. Disappointing, if only for comedy sake. Now he had nothing to write to Jas about later. ”You think my mom being back is more likely than Asteria being pregnant? My God.” That was enough to bring forth genuine laughter as he considered the odds. People were really so sussy over his relationship though, honestly, he’d not have it any other way. Aside from Theo, he enjoyed the second glances from others. ”What if it’s a trick question and .. both are true? Here for a good time not a long time, right? Just .. on a scale of one to ten how likely is it I'll die- no wait, how likely is it we'll both die?”

[attr="class","main"]"Stop... teasing Jack I know one of them is a lie-" At least he hoped one of them was. Another László wedding in the middle of the apocalypse would be absolute havok not to mention this would be Asteria's. Did she even want children? Would the child be safe? There were a million considerations that no doubt reflected in slightly narrowed brows as his body turned inward to collect pondering features between his finger and thumb. Dark features reflected deep thought. Maybe he wasn't joking. His mind was already lost in a million scenarios as Jackson continued on with his own statistics. No- wait- if she was alive was that the universe's way of saying damn you for messing around in things he shouldn't? It was always one terrible thing after a short spell of joy but- no- both? He tore himself through each mental page. Possible responses as he pointed a delicate finger outward and rocked it slightly in the direction of his son. "No- we are here for a long time-" He uttered quietly, his eyes still downward admist the thoughts running rampant. "Okay- Asteria." He began, drawing breath. "Are you ready for-" First things first. First things first.

[attr="class","main"]”Okay-” Palms raised level with his chest only to lower again as he allowed himself a moment of laughter at the situation’s expense. Considering what was happening he shouldn’t really find any humor in revealing the news but he’d never had any disagreements with his mother. Sure there was the whole end of the world thing going on outside but he’d never had to worry about it. A moment of silence for his own privilege was needed but not taken as he waved a hand dismissively. His father might view the situation differently but he was only looking forward to reuniting with her. ”I mean on a happier note she did say yes?” He shrugged, not like his father wasn’t aware of at least his intent to ask amid his banishment to care for Jasper. ”No, okay so .. And this is coming from Theo who heard it from his mom while she was threatening to murder his .. uncle .. step..father- … person.” Jack placed a finger to his chin in thought as he worked the relation over in his mind again. What did Theo call him? ”Anyway- what are you working on?” Wasn’t that big of a deal, right?

[attr="class","main"]Max shook his head lightly and adopted a far softer tone than the one previously employed. He didn't mean to cause offence and he was determined to banish any sort of doubt in his son's mind if he had any. The relationship between parents a ... curious one given their history both personal and political. Although the war raged he'd never try to dampen the spirits of a child so adoring of their parent. It was a precious thing and one he'd... never really had the joy of feeling himself beyond his own mother. "Oh?" He responded brightly before knocking his son's shoulder ligthly with a bunched fist. "That is good news - not that you having children isn't also good news." Max beamed with as much enthusiasm as he could offer. He didn't understand their relationship but as long as Jackson was content and happy then so was he. Somewhat... perplexed by them but supportive. Ashley was no doubt in as much shocked as he was - maybe even more.
"Nevermind that-" he deflected, waving his hand slightly as he collected the papers that had stolen Jackson's attention. "I believe he calls him Uncle - but... Alilah threatened Emmett and-" He asked, leaning forward slightly in curiosity. No worry could be found for Alilah beyond the obvious distress. She'd lay Emmett to rest with a single blow if she really wished to. "She said that he was responsible?" He wanted to be incredibly clear. If she had been resurrected with Emmett's aid there would be no time to waste. Still, his smile remained gentle as he drew a steady breath and his voice lightened at the thought. "I know I don't need to tell you this but... be careful when you go and see her?" Not that she would ever hurt him but... the horde of adversaries may just as well though he was as much faithful in Emmett's ability to enrage his wife as he was in Elisaveta's ability to tear through an army to protect her eldest. "You are going to see her, aren't you?"

[attr="class","main"]”If I knew potentially knocking up some girl and getting married would actually get you to smile I’d have done it .. well, I wouldn’t have done it sooner but-” It was the thought that counted, right? A palm reached up to rub the arm that had taken the hit with soft laughter. To be honest even he was a little shocked she’d said yes with such little resistance. There was a lot to talk about and even more to get done but it felt useless to even try with the few short weeks Jas would be in residential. Once he was out their dad would go back to worrying over him all hours regardless of whether or not he was better. ”Since he was thirteen-” Didn’t he used to call him something else? It would drive him mad until he figured it out. ”Anyway.. She does, yeah- I only know what Theo told me but he said something about Emmett didn’t ..” He paused for a moment, attempting to differentiate his personal emotions from the facts to give his father a clear idea of what happened. He didn’t care to think about someone attempting to dismember his mother or even the dirty details of how she came back in one piece. Yet, the facts were the facts and her death and the cause was no different than a dozen others that occupied Asteria’s commentary on the daily.
”He tried to dismember her but I guess when he buried her there were .. pieces of her that weren’t completely within the lines of the cemetery. … wherever that was.” He didn’t really need to fill in the blanks did he? Emmett was an incredibly intelligent man. One of the few that was able to keep up with his own thought process from time to time and capable of recognizing mistakes in nearly any process. He wouldn’t simply make such a miscalculation, it was unreasonable. What explanation was there other than the obvious? It was intentional. The gruesome details of how and why rendered nonsensical and poor taste in showmanship that he was no doubt pay for once his mother had fully recovered her strength. He had to know that as his wife chased him around the kitchen with a knife? ”What makes you think I know where she is?”How did he know?

[attr="class","main"]"It's less that and more... you being happy." It was possibly the first time he'd seen him genuinely softened by someone beyond the usual teasing and light poking that he was known for. Something sincere and genuine - he echoed a softness just beneath the surface. As if light radiated with every hushed laugh he attempted to shift into one of indifference or humour. His voice lowered slightly upon sight of wave of melancholy. "I rarely see it." Genuinely happy moments were few and far between and seldom lengthy as time had proven again and again. He dashed away any negative thoughts with a deep inhale and a widened smile. There was little point dwellng on it now that so much good was coming their way. The chance of them actually reaching it lessening with each passing day and new threat tearing its way through the fold. Still, he had to be hopeful. If he fell apart who would carry them? He wasn't ready to suffer any of his children that responsibility just yet. Not yet. Both palms met his knee in slight excitement. "But! You are happy and... that is what matters here. So congratulations are in order- once... " He waved his hand about the air to suggest the pandemic and everything else going on. "everything's free we can sort something." Maybe he was being too soppy. He usually was. He wasn't sure he'd appreciate the soft brush of skin against his wrist as meant to be reassuring but Max certainly did, no matter how momentary it might have been. It was much needed for the details that were soon thrown in his direction. Max wrapped both arms about Jackson's shoulders to offer comfort and congratulations.
Brows cut upward in heartache at the sight of trembling words and every desperate attempt to remain stoic - only two of his sons had mastered the art and even their father struggled with it on rare ocassion. Of course they all tried to distance themselves from their work but their hearts demanded full devotion the moment they entered the doors. It was a difficult balance, and... while Max always wished his children would come to him for everything he knew they felt themselves stable enough to seek solace elsewhere or in logic. Though... a bad day at work wasn't being subject to your mother's dismemberment at the hands of an old idol. The pause was all Max needed to see right through. The fact that they didn't allow her even a funeral was a point he wished to contend if only for his son's sake. Though Alilah wouldn't allow it, not after she'd been left in the dirt at the height of pregnancy and left to wander Rosethorn as if it were own abode. Max danced between concern for Jackson and rational thought. Emmett was a careful man though he had appeared to be exceedingly sloppy with covering his tracks in recent months... either this was intentional or he was slipping. Max didn't know which but only time would tell.
"She's your... mother? I know if I'd been ressurected after death the first people I'd want to see would be you and your brothers?" It was... common sense, wasn't it? His question was enough to cause a slight raise on the corner of his mouth in playful curiosity. "What makes you think I know where she is?"

[attr="class","main"]”Well, I’d tell you how I proposed to her buuuut I think that would then make you obligated to issue a warrant for my arrest sooo-” He teased, though it wasn’t exactly a lie either. He’d given Tokyo law enforcement one hell of a murder mystery to solve though the actual murder was less him and more Asteria. The setup was at least his. It wasn’t as though any normal ring and wording would do. Not for her. ”You lie, Sir. I am always happy.” He shot back, a hand over his heart to suggest he was offended at the thought. He knew the intent behind the words as well as his father knew there was something honest behind his own though neither would call the other on it. ”Er .. no offense or anything but-” He didn’t really need to finish that thought, did he? His dad was never going to be free. Not by any stretch of the imagination. If it wasn’t the world falling apart it was his love life. If it wasn’t his love life it was work. If it wasn’t work it was, as much as he hated to say it, Jasper. Though hopefully at least one of those things was being settled now that Jasper was getting the help he needed rather than being left to untrained security and hope of a father. ”It’s fine. I’ve already talked to her dad about some things and Ki and Maddi are helping with some other so.. It’s fine.”
He dismissed the embrace as quickly as he’d received it for what fleeting comfort could remedy the memory? Small moments of encouragement and hope only made the fall back to reality harder. Something he and Jasper both understood well. His father had only good intent and he’d never deny him such frivolities. ”I mean that’s a logical assessment based on your own emotional capacity but this isn’t you we’re talking about-” He began, catching himself at the start of a ramble only to lower his hands in defeat. ”I didn’t suggest you knew where she was.” He commented quietly, though now his suspicions were heightened. Why would his father think he would think the man knew where she was? Did he? ”I actually don’t know where she is. Neither do the Lászlós as far as I know. They did say something odd about Charlotte and Asteria and them being able to trace her for a little bit of time and then .. nothing. Almost like she disappeared or her connection to them was severed but how she’d do that .. I don’t know. But.. yeah-”
