[attr="class","theplot"]THE PLOT IN DEPTH GUIDE AND FAQTHIS SITE IS SEMI-CANON AND IS SET IN AN ALTERNATE CROSSOVER UNIVERSE.[attr="class","theplot"]THE SETTINGWelcome to Never to Return! This is an alternate timeline, semi-canon, Harry Potter/Supernatural roleplaying board set in the near future. Forget what you think you know about the magical world. We want to create a setting far away from the original timeline where a darker and more ominous existence is forming in the lull of peace. We want to enrich the lore and mythology by including lore from the Supernatural series. But what does this mean for you? What are the terms you need to know? How does the crossplay work?
AU-TIMELINE: Dozens of magical families were destroyed in the first war - we refer to Voldemort's first appearance when Harry was an infant, not the battle of 1998. All died during the battle of Godric's Hollow. No more Voldemort, no more Dumbledore, no more Potters. Likewise, there are no Winchesters to be played and we restrict character building to magical, creature or muggle so no gods etc.! No DIRECT canon descendants of these families. We DO allow family members to be made that are not directly impactful canons. For example, the Zabini family. If you're not certain about a family you can reach out to a member of staff!
SITE LORE: Although we base most of our lore on Harry Potter we've found the realm of what we can and can't do to be incredibly restrictive for a fantasy based site. Because of this, we also consider lore from Supernatural. Hunters play a role in our main site plot alongside the 'witch hunters'. A lot of our mythology and creature crafting is expanded through this world. We also use the concept of THE VEIL from the Dragon Age series. We are OPEN world so how you choose to craft and what details you bring to the table are mostly up to you but there is a guide in the special abilities section to help guide you. We are not restricted to one pantheon. All are accepted. Unique abilities are accepted!Cursed Child is NOT considered canon here.
SETTING: In early 2044 a string of murders happened worldwide. The perpetrator became known as LYK or 'Leap Year Killer'. They gathered nearly two dozen highly respected magical citizens, including the Russian and British ministers, and lead several others to their deaths. In doing so they were able to create enough of a magical force through their souls that they tore a rift into the veil between worlds. Mass devastation followed. Cities were destroyed. Billions of lives were lost to natural disaster or consequences of the void. The killer was later revealed to be @elisaveta .
QUICK MATH ::
The population before the mass destruction was near 7,800,000,000 people. Elisaveta wiped out about half of that leaving around 3,900,000,000 poor souls to cope. About 75% of the remaining souls ( 2,925,000,000 )live within one of the five main 'normal' societies. Imagine the overcrowding! About 65% of that population is magical. So you have a ratio of about 1,901,250,000 magical souls and 1,023,750,000 muggles.
☆ Magical population has been dying out on its own for the last century since the days of Grindelwald and it has had a direct impact on the presence of magic. Meaning, higher concentrations of magic, and the most powerful magical families, are located within magical community strongholds where a large population of magical folk choose to live to survive with one another. Five major magical strongholds exist today in America, Russia, Germany, Japan and Britain. General premise for plot, without the flowery words, is to stop Elisaveta from bringing about the destruction of the known world and creating an army of the dead with which she will wipe out all but her loyal followers.
☆ Magic exists outside of these strongholds, of course, but becomes a weaker force as the population dwindles. The farther out from a large population you are means the more control you have over the veil because of the lower concentration of it in the air. It also means the veil is particular thin in your area and subject to rips and tears which leaves you vulnerable to exposure from the "otherworld". (Keep reading for information on what 'the veil' is!)
☆ Otherworld is the term given to the realm beyond Earth. It's also used to describe areas of the world that are currently exposed to unfiltered magic from the veil or occupied by spirits or demons etc. from beyond the veil. The otherworld often looks different from the world we know and love but that isn't always the case. It can manifest and look different based on the area and which type of spirit/demon/god is inhabiting it. Visibility is often low due to smoke or fog and an overhead veil of green or indigo has often taken the place of the natural sky. Areas can be heavily populated by several monsters or just one or two lost spirits.
☆ The veil is the source of all magical ability and exists as a sort of blanket between the world and the astral/spiritual plane. The veil acts as a shield between the world we live in and the world of gods and spirits/demons and other creatures.
☆ A rip or tear in the veils leaves the world beneath it exposed to attack by a whole host of spirits or demons. You must remember that the world they know and the world they find themselves in are vastly different and while not all who venture beyond the veil seek to harm you, there are just as many that do.
☆ The closer you are to a strong and intact veil, the stronger your magical ability will be but the less experimental it will be. Meaning, if you live under a strong veil in one of the remaining 'normal' societies then the scope of your magical ability will be reflective of typical magic ability and limits of the HP universe. Likewise, the closer you live to a thin veil the less effective your magical ability will become but the more wild it will be. Some people living under a thin veil have discovered new magical abilities not found in typical magical society and wield them with a strength comparable to those in the cities. Veil magic works best when paired with illegal and old magics such as blood rituals and nature. Be careful! A powerful enough community may be able to control the opening and closing of the veil on their own in areas where it is already thin. This is highly illegal.
The differences in the veil have directly impacted the way society looks and operates.
☆ ---- The magical community was, until 2044, governed by three separate systems. The default governance in the three main magical countries listed above. After the veil was torn open by Elisaveta Grindelwald in the leap year murders, Russia and Britain both lost their leaders and all countries defaulted to the president of MACUSA who handled the situation with haste. This was how the entire magical community came to be under the rule of one particular branch of government.
☆ ---- Living in a country that has a high concentration of magic, or even on the outskirts, means life will look pretty much the same for you. Everyone is civilized, everyone follows the laws of the lands, and you aren't likely to experience any hardships that come from living beneath a thin veil. You are automatically protected. Yo DO and WILL answer to MACUSA for law regardless of your location.
☆ ---- If you live in an area that is beneath a thin veil you'll notice a dramatic change in the way you live. A large majority of cities were abandoned in early 2044 when the veil was torn open and stepping foot into one now is both dangerous and frightening. The destruction of escaping populations is evident. Laws are meant to exist and be enforced but there's no one left who can enforce them. Some areas are just scenes of absolute lawlessness and anarchy. Crime is rampant in these 'survivor rings' and any normal citizen would be wise to avoid them. From time to time MACUSA may send in aurors to raid the cities and bring people to 'safety' in the cities. (You'll find communities of all varieties and origins in this mix and each has their own ways of survival from living off the land to murder.)
☆ ---- Because of the danger these places now pose you would find it extremely difficult to pass simple supplies into these cities. Necessities such as water, clothes, and even medical supplies are scarce and are the typical cause of most disputes and deaths in the outskirts. Do not forget that on top of these communities they are also faced with demons and spirits pouring in from the compromised veil.
☆ ---- When the veil experiences a major rip or tear there is an alert system in place to warn the citizens of the outskirts. You'll be able to hear the 'community alert sirens' or 'air raid sirens' that allow at least five minutes for you to get indoors and prepare yourself for the veil to be lifted where it was torn.
☆ ---- Once the veil is ripped or torn it will need to be repaired. Usually, MACUSA will send out a team of Aurors with a few specialists to repair them. How long this will take depends on a lot of unpredictable factors so make sure you're prepared.
☆ ---- The veil is a lucrative but dangerous business. People in the main cities will pay top dollar for samples from veil creatures. Even more for the creature itself. Bounty hunting is a booming business!
☆ There are no limitations on spirits/demons or even which gods/pantheons are honored when the veil is torn or within the 'otherworld'. You may choose to play with a wide variety of mythology in this particular area.
☆ THE MUGGLE WORLD :: The magical community had been on the brink of exposure since April of 2043 and Timeless. Still, they had no warning before the veil was torn open in February of 2044 and as a result they found themselves mostly defenseless against the devastation that followed. MACUSA was quick to take in as many muggles as they could potentially save but the numbers were tragic. For the first time in centuries, the magical population vastly outnumbers that of the muggle community.
☆ ---- Muggle weapons are effective against creatures of the fade and are actually favored to poor magical ability in areas where the veil is thin.
☆ ---- The magical community and muggle communities live together but do no coexist peacefully. You can easily find communities within communities and the prejudices and violence toward one another are stronger than ever.
